Males Getting Behind In recent years, the topic of gender differences has been a popular subject promoted by the media, discussed in educational classes, and argued among professionals. Sociologists and psychologists have been reporting to the public; articles about the differences in behavior of boys and girls, their brains, their achievement, and their nature. The results of these studies are surprising because it appears that males are getting behind. From the early 1990’s until now, psychologists have been doing extensive research about the differences between the male and female brains, and they have revealed a lot of interesting information. When boys enter their first year of school, their brains are already behind those of girls. This is important to consider, according to James Garbarino, a professor of human development at Cornell University. He states that “The nerves on a boy’s fingers develop later than those on a girl, making it hard to hold a pencil and push out perfect writing; while on the other hand; a female has neat, legible handwriting.”
In many cases, the boy’s excuse would be that he does not want to make girly writing, which is an answer that is usually accepted as an obvious reason, but the truth is that the boy’s brain is mentally behind. Meanwhile, the body of the boy is following the instinct of being active and wanting to run and play. This desire causes educational difficulties such as hyperactivity, attention deficit, and a dislike for school exhibited in behavior problems. When the boy reaches the ages of 13 to 17 years old, in many cases the boy will be found in the weight room building muscle mass; playing violent, bloody video games; downloading rap music to his computer; and getting further behind, while girls work on taking over the honor roll. During the last ten years, the statistics about schools and academic achievement have revealed that boys are falling behind academically. According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, 27% of the students involved in student government are girls and only 19% are boys. In academic clubs, 36% are girls and 28% are boys.
