Weight In Society

Society knows that over half the population is over-weight and the media still portrays beautiful women all over for the human eye to see. This puts stress on females to look the same. Just fifty years ago, being a little on the heavy side was fashionable. In the forties, Marilyn Monroe wore a twelve pants size. Many people today would consider that obese and heavy. But being plump showed wealth and to have distinct curves was very sexy back then. Nowadays, women who look like flagpoles and wear practically nothing are considered stunning.

Being that skinny is a lot easier said than done due to the most influential source in the media, the television. The average person watches around 116,800 hours in their lifetime and sees over 6,000 advertisements during the day. The television impacts everyone’s lives no matter if you are the President of the United States watching in the Oval Office or a bum in New York City tuning in on a street corner. Guys are hanging all over her and I think to myself, “If I look like Brittany Spears, I can get any guy that I want.” So if I go out with my girlfriends that night wearing a skimpy skirt and tube-top, just like Brittany Spears, would people find me irresistible and beautiful? No, they would all look at me like a slut.

So when did it all change throughout the years? In just half a century, the social acceptance of weight changed dramatically from being chubby and well fed, to a stick that barely eats. It wasn’t just one person that differentiated the norm, but it was a lot of people who worked together and started feeding America this new image through the media. We were taught growing up to eat healthy and to love who we are on the inside, not what is on the outside. But in today’s world, we understand that the accepted look is to be skinny and beautiful, no matter how many ribs can stick out through your skin.

But in reality, the social acceptance is to loo
