Comfort Women

Topic: Were the Japanese Comfort Women of World War Two Patriots or Prostitutes?

Taiwanese, Chinese, Korean, and Filipino women during World War Two were encouraged to support the war effort by joining the Women’s Patriotic Service Corps. Little did they know that meant with their sexuality.

The use of comfort women (women placed into small societies to service Japanese soldiers during World War Two), some say was a way to sooth or comfort the soldiers involved in the war with sexual activities. In this paper I intend to argue the injustice these Taiwanese, Chinese, Korean, and Filipino women endured from the Japanese during World War Two. This was not an act to support the war effort but instead these women were tricked into an illegal ring of sexual exploitation.

There are many reasons why the Japanese feel justified in their actions though they may not hold the same moral values now they believe it was the spirit of the time and should be excused. In 1939 it was considered alright to manipulate women because their were no women’s rights, and for this reason Japan feels they should be let off the hook.

At a time when feminism was at it’s high after being pressured by feminists the Japanese

They were then broken up into small groups and taken into different directions. Sil’s group was brought to a small house and placed in tiny rooms about five square meters and sectioned off by straw mats. Like most of the other girls Sil was a virgin and she could hear the other high pitched screams as she thought about what was going to happen to her.

In Japanese armed forces there were many superstitions, which help them justify the use of comfort women. It is believed that sex before going into battle worked as a charm against injury. Amulets would be made of the comfort women’s pubic hair or form something belonging to them in order to bring good luck. Sexual deprivation was believed to make a soldier accident-prone. Sex also acted to relieve stress during battle. In this book entitled: The Emperor’s Forces and Korean Comfort Women Japanese private Kim Il Myon states:

“To soldiers in the frontline, ever surrounding by the sound of guns, wrapped in smoke stinking of death and not knowing when death would come… a visit to a comfort station was no doubt the only kind of individual act in which one was liberated… the comfort stations of the unit was their oasis.” (The Comfort Women, Hicks p. 92)

In one case a man who had never visited a comfort station was forcibly taken while his fellow comrades watched through a peephole as the women were chasing him around the room. In War Ministry circular the Japanese rationale for this is expressed:
