The Crucible

There comes a time in a man’s life when he must face his past and come to terms with it. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, John Proctor is a man with a sinful past and a most uncertain future. He is a just and righteous man who gets caught in the middle of a most horrible rampage brought on by jealousy and in the end is trapped by a truthful confession.

In a way, The Crucible has the structure of a classical tragedy, with John Proctor as the play’s tragic hero. Truthful, upright, and blunt-spoken, Proctor is a good man, but one with a secret, fatal flaw. His lust for Abigail Williams led to their affair (which occurs before the play begins), and created Abigail’s jealousy of his wife, Elizabeth, which sets the entire witch hyst
