Over the last fifteen years there has been many changes in the way we work and in the way that we are managed. These changes can be attributed to many factors but primarily they have been due to three main contributing factors. These factors are:The last fifteen years has seen many changes in technology, the Australian economy and Australian society. These forces have not working independently of each other with one or more of the forces having an effect on the other. The combined force of these three factors has had a profound impact on the strategic management of people in today’s workforce Throughout the post war period the Australian economy has continued to grow strongly, despite occasional fluctuations. These figures are also supported by the fact that the proportion of the population aged over 65 in 1997 was 12% and is expected to increase to 24% by 2051. This has presented the organisation with a whole new suit of issues when it comes to managing these people. From a social perceptive, this has benefits for families, as it enables one parent the ability to be at home. Over the last fifteen years Information Technology and telecommunications have also played an increasingly significant key role the changing of organisations and the management of people within them. This can be difficult manage it would be harder to monitor several sites as opposed to one central site. These policies have included language education and the need to break down of cultural barriers. One of the largest trends to come from Information Technology is the use of E-mail. E-mail has led to a change in the way employees and employers communicate with each other. More and more people are communicating via e-mail and this is resulting in the ‘human’ part of communicating as employees write to each over instead verbal. This has resulted in the emotion being removed from communication. With these significant changes in Society, the Economy and Technology it is arguable that workplace conditions have improved over the last ten to fifteen years.
