Works of Ambrose Bierce

In many of his works, Ambrose Bierce uses the affects of warfare and how it takes its toll on society. Ambrose Bierce wrote during the Civil War Period. Most of his stories and characters were set during this period.

In “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” Peyton Farquhar loses everything to help the Confederate Army. Many of Bierce’s stories “draw upon his experiences in the Civil War, earning him a reputation as a realistic author of war fiction.” (Hall, Sharon 87) Farquhar a “civilian and a student of hanging” is caught trying to sabotage a Union railroad by setting fire to it and is caught and is sentenced to be hung at Owl Creek Bridge. Then they struck!…they trooped innumerous, a ghastly crew.” (766) The cats and dogs then met midway through town. Bierce has a “dark vision of life” which “centers on warfare and the cruel joke it plays on humanity.” (Probst, Robert 466) Then in return the cats and dogs prepared to fight. “Midway through town it met in procession of cats in full song. The cats instantly exalted their backs and magnified their tails; the dead dogs uncovered their teeth as in life, and erected such of their bristles as still adhered to the skin.” (466) The cats and dogs engaged in such a battle that they started destroying the town. “The carnage ensued was too awful for relation.” (767) After the dogs and cats started tearing apart the city the townspeople go
