Expansion and Economy

Expansion and Economy: 1820-1840

For a span of twenty years, American democracy experienced large amounts of change due to many decisions made by those in power. Two important influences were the Jacksonian Economic Policy and the need for western expansion. One of these topics not only divided the American government, it also set the standards for said government into even modern time. The other topic not only gained more land for America, it also divided it in part of slavery. Either ways both of these influences played a major role in the development of American democracy, whether hindering, or helping it.

As America entered the 19th century, America’s size grew immensely. More and more explorers were coming back from their journeys telling the tales of new land, and beautiful cropping area’s and stretches of grounds, ripe for habitation. This started a new range of settlements, eventually creating what is now the mid west. Yet this all began to take place during the major political clash over slavery. Andrew Jackson, who was the president from 1829 to 1837, played a major part in all of this. The problem was more of a separation of culture and land than anything else. The north and south

The Jacksonian Economic Policy played a major role in the change of American democracy. Since the moment Jackson was elected, it was said he had the people at his heart. He wanted to please them by any means possible. He was from the South and knew southern economics but he also had to keep the rest of the countries needs in the mind.

In the end, it was the Jacksonian policy which help reformed America’s economy and financial problems. It evened out things financially, and pulled America out of a speculativ economy, which most likely would’ve put the most wealthy American’s into power. It also set up and efficient form of bank. Meanwhile, western expansion separated the country through geographical cultures. The Northern and Southern politics would be clashing through the Civil war, almost tearing America apart permanently. Either ways, although everything worked out to it’s benefit, if Western Development and Jackson’s economic policy hadn’t come into effect, democracy might be a totally different thing than it is today.

American Industries were no longer child industries, they had grown and were now needed more and more protection from foreign trade competition. This deemed it necessary for more tariffs to be made. Yet it in end it was the South which paid more for it’s imports from New England. Jackson although from the South, still held the whole country in mind and decided to take the tariff’s and split them evenly through out the whole country.
