The case for protection of national sovereignty

It is because globalization destroys the 3rd world which it seeks to protect. It is because globalization in the long term will deplete all of our resources at a much faster rate then if we valued the sovereignty of diverse nations and it is because globalization in the long term will destroy the human race, I must say a firm “no” when asked the question: should globalization be valued above the sovereignty of nations. In today’s presentation I would like to first like to define the conflicting forces of globalization and national sovereignty and then discuss in detail the reasons for why man kind should rise up against the forces of globalization or at least negate this evil process. Now let me discuss to you ladies and gentlemen what is globalization. According to Mokgethi B. G. Mothlabi the definition of globalization is the “sharing and spreading of ideas, values, and utilities to individuals and nations across the globe”. Note ladies and gentlemen that this is only a generic definition and there is more to globalization then there seems. I will address this in a moment. First of all Globalization increases poverty for the third world. The advocates of globalization might try to convince you that globalization eradicates world poverty, while evidence proves exactly the opposite. The saying, “The rich get richer, the poor get poorer” applies perfectly to globalization. Even in the United States, inequality is increasing. According to Nancy Birdsall in a study for the United Nations, the income of the poorest 20 percent of households in this country has been steadily decreasing since 1970 while the income of the richest 20 percent has increased by 15 percent and that of the richest 1 percent by more than 100 percent. At the global level, since 1950, the portion of the world’s population living in poor countries grew by 250 percent. Today, 80 percent of the world’s population controls only 20 percent of the world’s wealth. The ratio of average income of the richest country in the world to that of the poorest has risen from 9 to 1 at the end of the nineteenth century to at least 60 to 1 today. Globalization has devastated the economies of many countries, because the institutions that control globalization—organizations like Nike, Microsoft, and Starbucks—do not act out of the best interest of the world, but out of their interest in their own pocketbooks. Money from globalization in fact is not distributed evenly but ends up most in the wealthy populations bank accounts and the results of globalization on the environment from this greed is devastating and almost impossible to recover from.

In conclusion my fellow comrades I hope from the bottom of my bleeding heart that bef
