Romeo and Juliet

In my Comparison Essay I will compare Zeferelli’s version of Romeo and Juliet to the modern version of Romeo and Juliet staring Leonardo Dicaprio, and Claire Danes.

Romeo and Juliet is old but is really famous around the world. Romeo and Juliet is a play, written by a famous play write named William Shakespeare. William Shakespeare was born April 23rd, 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon near London, England to Mary Arden and John Shakespeare. William’s family was one of the rich families in that city and also very well known. His father was the mayor of Stratford, and his mother had inherited a whole bunch of land. William had 7 brothers and sisters. William married at the age of 18 to Anne Hathaway on November 27, 1582. Anne was born in the year 1556 making her 8 years older than William. Anne and William had 3 children together, Susanna, Hamnet, Judith. Hamnet and Judith were twins. William and Anne lived most of their life in the city of London until William retired and moved back to Stratford for the last 6 years of his life. By the year 1592, he was recognized as a successful actor on the London stage—as well as a leading poet. He acted in many of the plays he wrote. William wrote at least 36 plays plus sonnets

and other poems. He changed the English stage with his dramatic and poetic genius. His understanding of people, his skill with words, his sense of drama—what would please the people. His characters are real. The English language and the English theatre have never been the same. William Shakespeare died on his 52nd birthday. April 23, 1616 in Stratford. William was buried in the chancel of the church of holy trinity as a honored citizen. On his tombstone is carved a rather wry inscription: Good Friend, for Jesu’s sake forbear

As Romeo got to the Vault that night Paris was there with his Paige (servant) to lay flowers on Juliet’s tomb. Just as Paris was walking up to her tomb he saw Romeo and drew his sword, because he wasn’t supposed to be in town, as soon as Romeo saw Paris draw his sword he drew his because he wasn’t going to let Paris stop him from sleeping with Juliet. Romeo slays Paris and enters the tomb to find Juliet. As soon as He finds her body he lays beside her and drinks poison to kill himself. Just as Romeo drank the poison Juliet awakens and sees him dead so she kisses him thinking she could get some poison from his lips, she couldn’t so she stabs herself. Friar Lawrence later on finds the two as well as the Capulets and the Montagues and the Friar must explain it all for them.
