Concepts from Intentional Helping and Opinions Regarding Them
Overall I felt the book Intentional Helping was a very informative and useful text. Many of the concepts it discussed were things that I have felt were important and it really helped focus those ideas. For this assignment I am going to use a format of stating the concept as a header and then define and add opinion below it.
The book talks about several aspects of caring two of which stood out to me. They were self-knowledge and accepting others. The book states that as helpers we must offer more than good intentions and positive regard it also seems imperative that you would want to know as much as possible about how to help. The book also talked about accepting your client as they are. I feel that these are two extremely important concepts to anyone who wants to be in the helping profession. Without either of these aspects you are no longer helping anyone.
Balancing the care you give to others with the care you give yourself is another concept the book talks about. To often people in this business get out of balanced and then start feeling they are owed the difference. This seems to manifest itself as an excuse t
A belief that good things will happen and that people have the potential to make positive changes in their life. This optimism must be tempered by realistic expectations. It should not come across as idealism, but more like self-confidence. I agree with this concept and feel an optimistic helper is more likely to help a client achieve positive change.
