When Alexander became King of Macedon in 336BC, he secured his rule in a number of different ways. These included; gaining the support of his father Philip’s two most trusted generals and further the Macedonian army, the removal of possible rivals to the throne, securing the hostile region to the north and finally gaining the loyalty of the Greeks.
Upon Alexander’s ascension to the throne it was important for him to gain recognition as his father’s successor. One of Philip’s general’s Antipater arranged the army to greet Alexander as their king and possibly played a role in the murder and exile of rival candidates.
