“Homeboy” by Malcolm X does not use parts or the whole. Throughout this story he is comparing and contrasting many different ideas and objects. Malcolm compares the Roxbury Negroes on Waumbeck and Humboldt Hill to the Negroes on the street. He describes the differences between their language, their jobs, their clothes, and how fake they are. The Negroes of the Roxbury were high-class, educated, important Negroes, living well, working in big jobs and positions. They had big homes on freshly mowed yards and walked with their noses high to the sky. As Malcolm X put it, “the Negroes on the hill were breaking their backs trying to imitate white people”. Conversely, the street Negroes worked as hustlers and con artists, talked in slang, and wore zoot suits. At Roseland dances, blacks were not allowed at the white dances. The white dances started at 7 p.m., while the black dances started at 2 a.m. The effectiveness of compare and contrast in this story was weakened, because Malcolm X kept jumping back and forth to different topics which made it confusing.

“Why Boys Don’t Play With Dolls” by Katha Pollitt uses compare and contrast by parts. In this story, the author uses separate paragraphs to justify why boys like trucks and girls like dolls. In paragraph five, the author states she is at a child’s birthday party and receives a Barbie as a gift and one of the mother’s apologizes for it. In paragraphs six and seven, she begins to compare Barbie to the American ideal of how a woman should look. She explains how important a woman’s physical appearance is in today’s demanding society and that even the most attractive of women have suffered over her body’s incapability to fit today’s standards. Pollitt then questions why we would want to pass the Barbie image on to the next generation, but she then answers by saying that to reject her is to say that everything that Barbie represents- being sexy, thin, and stylish- is unimportant, which everyone knows is not the truth.
