E-check

E-check has been criticized by residents of Butler County for some time. It has been referred to as inefficient, unfair, too costly and even stupid. Many people have complained that their lives have been made harder by E-check. They have said that E-check is a waste of people’s time waiting in line and of their money paying for the testing. Most feel that the test is useless because semi trucks and government vehicles aren't required to be tested. Most people in Butler County have let a few problems with the system overshadow the benefits of an idea that really isn’t all that bad, and could greatly improve the health and quality of life for many people.

One of the problems that residents have with the E-check is the price for the test. According to a study by the EPA: most residents feel that the fee of $19.50 was ridiculous. However, the 2001 Annual report of Ohio Vehicle Emissions Testing program indicates that $19.50 is one of the nation’s lowest fees for advanced emissions testing. In Houston, Texas, according to the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission: Houston residents end up paying a total of $39.50 for emissions testing and that doesn’t even include state and administration fees. After the

Another thing that has some residents irritated is the fact that so many people fail the E-check. Some believe that the tests are very difficult to pass and the majority of people cannot pass the test. This is not true; the reports show that out of 1,905,059 vehicles tested in 2001, 1,728,902 (90.8%) passed the test. Most failures occur due to poor vehicle maintenance. Therefore if people work harder to maintain their cars, they will have a much better the chance for passing the test and the air quality will improve.

se fees have been added the total cost to the consumer goes up to $69.50. $19.50 every two years is relatively low compared to that.

E-check is a highly intelligent idea, which, if implemented correctly, will have nothing but positive results for Butler County. So before writing off E-check because of the biannual fee or because of the inconvenience of making vehicle repairs, think of all the benefits of E-check: Cleaner air and better health. Clean air and good health have never hurt anyone.

But how much does the E-check improve air quality? When government vehicles do not have to get tested and semi trucks (diesel vehicles weighing more than 10,000 pounds) don’t need to be tested, add in the fact that places like AK Steel do not need to be tested, how much could having restr
