In the novel, Hester flees from her life in Europe, which she didn’t like, and moves to America. She settles in a puritan community, where she meets Arthur Dimmesdale, a young puritan minister, and she commits the act of adultery. Several months later the town realizes she has committed adultery, due to the fact that they knew her husband was still in England, and decide to punish her, not knowing who the lover is. The town decides to punish her by making her wear a scarlet letter on her chest, which she has to wear everyday for the rest of her life, to symbolize that she is an “adulterer.” In this way the whole town knows what she has done and can be seen as an act of just

Although the letter “A” develops a problematic situation between Dimmesdale and Chillingsworth, it still doesn’t lose its significance, but instead it changes it into several things. In the beginning the letter serves as a mark to represent that she has committed the act of Adultery and that its purpose is to show everyone what she has done, and for Hester to be ashamed of her crime. At first the letter serves its purpose, but over time people don’t seem to care about the letter, and accept Hester for who she is, due to the fact that she helped many people out. Throughout the novel Hester helps many people out, through her knitting and her help with the poor. Thus the letter turns from being “Adulterer” to being “Able.” And because of this the town people appreciate Hester and what she has done, proving to Hester that she is ultimately pure and not evil. But more towards the end of the novel, the letter transforms from “Able” to “Angel”, because she begins to build her character and have more will power, thus she sees herself more as a good person. She respects the “A” more and even reaches a point where she sees the letter as something pointless, and even at times takes it off. But she never removed it permanently, because she believed that the letter would fall off by itself though time.
