line 6 pod product review
POD is a specifically guitar/bass guitar designed amplifier tone emulator with additional on-board effects targeted as a professional/semi professional recording tool.Unlike guitar effects processors/pedals the POD is designed to sit on top of the amplifier in its custom designed holder and can be connected to a pedal board which acts as the stomp boxes. POD looks aesthetically pleasing and futuristic and appealing, while also having a kidney-shaped metal outer body which comes in metallic red, charcoal or polished silver. The nature of POD which places it into a league of its own, is that it can be used as a Direct Injection (DI) into a multi track sequencer/recorder, plugged straight into the amplifier or Public Address (PA), or listened to by plugging straight into with head phones. Also POD comes with software, which enables the user to connect POD into their home computer, thus allowing down-loads from the Line 6 website direct to the user’s POD in their home/studio. POD comes with preset and user functions of amplifier models which can be stored in its memory, also this can be done from down-loads. This function allows the user to store guitar tone settings, which when the PODâ
POD version one was marketed and was so successful, that Line 6 introduced POD version two. The main difference between POD version one, was that it only had 16 classic guitar amplifiers. POD version two came with an extra 16 guitar amplifiers, making a total of 32 classic guitar amplifier tones. Because of the massive success of POD version one, Line 6 decided to give their customers who had previously purchased POD version one, the option of upgrading their POD to POD version two, by way of a software package. This would enable their previous customers to feel that their original POD was not at all obsolete and that they would not have to fork out an extra £300 for the new relatively higher specification version of POD version two. A special edition version of POD was introduced to the market. It was called POD Pro. By appearance it looked very cool indeed. It had a highly polished metal body. It did everything that POD version 2 did with built-in ‘effect loop, digital out and more.’(Appendix E/POD version 2 Manual). There were only a strict limited number of these units made. This in turn commanded a higher price, which retailed at around £350. As there was not much of an upgrade from POD version 2, Line 6 didn’t expect to sell too many of these as version 2 was still clearing from the retailers. This is also why there were only a limited number made.
