The Ku Klux Klan: Crimes and Christianity
The Ku Klux Ku Klux Klan was an organization that first came about in the South in 1964, shortly after the civil war. The name Ku Klux comes from the Greek word kyklos, which means circle. The Ku Klux Klan was founded in Pulaski, Tennessee, in 1866, as a social group for war veterans, but many Southerners used the Ku Klux Klan to terrorize former slaves. The Ku Klux Klan then spread throughout the ex-Confederate states. In 1967, the group reorganized “The Invisible Empire of the South”, with a “Grand Wizard” as the leader. A “Grand Dragon” ruled each “realm”, which is actually just a state in the United States. Each “Grand Titan” headed up the counties, called “Provinces.” A “Grand Cyclops” ruled over each local unit, called “dens” (World Book, 310). During the Reconstruction of the South, the Ku Klux Klan tried to prevent recently released slaves from voting, and threatened white allies of the African Americans.
