Reaction Notes: The Power and the Glory parts 3 & 4Parts three and four of Graham Greene’s The Power and the Glory, maintained the story’s bizarre nature while focusing mainly on the whiskey priest. Concentrating more on the whiskey priest allowed the reader to determine whether the whiskey priest was a saint, sinner, or both. In the beginning of part three, the whiskey priest was staying at home with the Lehr’s. He left soon, for he felt he had been living in luxury. Soon after, the priest goes to a village, where he agrees to hear confessions and to baptize. The people that are receiving confessions and baptisms are poor, so the priest lowers the price. In the priest’s final hours he repented his sins and asked God for forgiveness. He wanted to see his wife again, but she felt she was being trapped and did not proceed. In the morning of his shooting, the priest began to mourn his death. “He knew now that at the end there was only one thing that counted—to be a saint.” (Part III, Chapter 4) When the priest was killed, there was not much made of it in the book.
