Poppy is the common name for a family of herblike flowering plants, found mainly in the North Temperate Zone. The Poppy family contains 23 genera or groups, and 210 species. The true poppy is the genera Papaver and includes the Oriental Poppy, Corn Poppy, Iceland Poppy, and the Opium Poppy. These plants can be perennial, annual or biennial, and are native of Eastern Asia, North America and Europe. Poppies occupy varied habitats, but they are more common in open, well-drained or sandy areas. They require a long cool growing season, with plenty of sun to thrive. Poppies are usually grown from seed, but some can be grown from root cuttings.
Poppy leaves grow mainly at the base of the flower
