Report on borley rectory

Just imagine, a lively dinner party full of people dancing and eating and laughing when all of a sudden a wave of cold air falls over the room, as a bone chilling silence fills the ears of the party goers, all eyes are drawn to the ghastly figure of a woman in all gray glaring through the window. In the blink of an eye the figure is gone, leaving only the question, was that a ghost? This is the question that has been puzzling thousands for decades. Borley Rectory was built in 1863 on the site of a medieval monastery for a clergyman, Henry Bull. In 1892 Henry Bull died and left the rectory to his oldest son Harry. He lived there until he died in 1927. Eric Smith then bought Borley Rectory in 1928. The Smiths moved out in 1929 and the rectory was uninhabited until October of 1930 when Lionel and Marianne Foyster moved in. They moved out in 1935. In that same year Harry Price, a phenomena investigator, leased the rectory. He stayed there until 1938 when Capt. W. H. Gregson bought Borley. Gregson stayed at Borley until it burned to the ground in February of 1939. All who lived in the rectory experienced unexplainable events. According to legend, a monk from the monastery that stood on the site eloped with

a nun from a nearby convent and one night, while attempting to escape, with the aid of a coachman were captured and all three suffered an ill fate. There are many variations of the legend and there are those who don’t believe in anything paranormal at all. Harry Price who named Borley Rectory “the most haunted house” documented Over 2,000 poltergeist phenomena. There are two explanations for the mystery, the first being that there were actually ghosts that haunted the rectory, and the second that everything was just a myth. So much extensive research has been done that there is more evidence supporting the idea that ghosts actually did exist than there is supporting that there never was.

After Harry Price’s death in 1948 several people accused him of fraud. The strange lights were proven to be the reflections of passing trains, voices could have been locals passing by and rats could have caused the bells ringing. Possibly the most persuasive is the testimony of Mrs. Smith. She stated that nothing out of the ordinary occurred until after Price arrived. She believed that it was Price himself that caused the phenomena. Some of the people Price worked with were skeptical of the credibility of his work. They said that his research was too disorganized and unprofessional. He omitted information that would give a natural explanation of certain phenomena. Even if his documentations were truthful they were too unreliable to be taken seriously. The only evidence presented that supports the idea there were not really ghosts is the incidence when Price was caught throwing pebbles at people attempting to create the idea of a phenomena. Even if Price was the one throwing rocks that explains only one occurrence out of thousands over a very large time span.

What would it take to make someone believe in ghosts? Telekinesis, voices, footsteps,
