The internet may cause some people to have less social contact with people that are geographically close to them, but it allows people to be ‘close’ to people that are far away. The internet allows someone who may have moved for a job, school, or other reason stay in close contact with the people they left behind. If someone is feeling lonely and shy in a new place they still have the ability to connect to a familiar person when needed easier and more frequently that with the phone or mail. Because of the internet people are able to choose who they want to be social with instead of being forced to have contact with people they may not feel connected to.
