The Harry Potter Controversy

“It will take thousands of dollars and years worth of therapy to help your children recover from seeing this movie! The bible says that in the end times man will call good evil and evil good!” These strident admonitions came from a well dressed, large framed man who walked up and down the length of the pre-purchased ticket line in front of the theatre. Debate over Harry Potter is intense, but this is not a new war; it is just another battle in the ongoing war to win the power to control what individuals are able to know or do.

In all battles there are opposing sides and a difference of opinion. The primary objectors to the Harry Potter books are religious people. They fear that the movie will harm their children by inducing a curiosity about witchcraft and lowering their resistance to Satan and demons. Some tangible results of this fear are listed below:

“A British toy shop chain is refusing to stock Harry Potter merchandise fearing it will attract children to the occult…The owner of The Entertainer chain, Gary Grant, has banned the toys from his 28 outlets UK-wide, according to the Daily Telegraph.”

“Harry Potter's reign at the box office is being challenged by residents of a town in Somerset…Ni

Some Christians even oppose adults watching the movie since the Church teaches that Christians are to have no association with anything dealing with wizardry. “The Catechism of the Catholic Church states clearly: “All practices of magic or sorcery, by which one attempts to tame occult powers, so as to place them at one’s service and have a supernatural power over others — even if this were for the sake of restoring their health — are gravely contrary to the virtue of religion. … The Church for her part warns the faithful against it”...This is strong language in the catechism, the same language used to condemn lust, fornication, and abortion. Catholics cannot in good conscience take such a warning lightly. If Harry were using lust, fornication, or abortion to save his friends at Hogwarts, would we still think these books were acceptable children’s fare?”

And the books this enemy is trying to ban? No. 1 on the ALA's current list is J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series. No. 5 is John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men." Number 6 is Maya Angelou's "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings." Those books can be found in 98 percent of the nation's bookstores and 99 percent of its libraries. They can be bought over the Web, listened to on tape, and read in a host of foreign languages. This is censorship?”

There are valid arguments for all sides of this debate. The problem arises when people are unwilling to compromise. The religious people have the right to insulate their children from ideas which will compromise their faith. They should not be forced to conform to humanistic practices. However, they must also compromise by being willing to pull themselves from the world but not force others to follow them.
