Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born into a Baptist family in 1929. Both his father and grandfather were Baptist ministers, so he followed in their footsteps. King was the leader of a boycott of buses after a black woman, Rosa Parks, was arrested for refusing to give her seat to a white woman. About a year after the boycott started, the United States Supreme Court forbid segregated seating on public buses in Montgomery, Alabama. What started King’s career in the civil rights movement was

the bus boycott. He became a very successful leader and a brilliant speaker. King gave many speeches, but his most famous was given in 1963. The “I Have a Dream” speech was given to more than 200,000 people. The year after he gave this speech, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Also in the same year, King was given the Nobel Peace Prize. He continued working for equality and justice for African Americans until April 4, 1968, when he was assassinated on the balcony outside his hotel room in Memphis, Tennessee.
