The Addictive Nature of EverQuest
This paper outlines the addictive nature of the popular online computer game EverQuest (EQ). And further more, decides if it should be classified with other major addictions such as Drugs or gambling. The definition of âaddictionâ varies but popular culture has brought into use the word âaddictionâ to manifest itself in a ââŚform of âobsessive compulsive behavior â â addictions to food, romance and sex, destructive relationships in which one partner became dependant on an inappropriate partner, even excessive shopping and plastic surgery could be seen as addictions.â (Elayne Rapping, Ed U.S. Talk shows, Feminism, politics and communication â New Jersey: Hampton Press Inc 2000) The Collins Australian â English Dictionary defines addiction similarly in the form âto give oneself up to strong habitâ (Collins Australian English Dictionary â Collins 2001). Sony Online Entertainmentâs EverQuest (EQ) is the most popular âmassively multiplayer online role â playing gameâ (MMORPG) to grace the online market with a subscriber base of around 430 000 gamers. The game started in 1997 and now makes more money than the gross annual profits of some smaller co
untries. At any one time a minimum of 45000 people are playing. This number increases to 300 000 playing in peak periods. (www.alakazam.com) Being that a negative will generally outweigh a positive especially where death is involved. There are also many positive aspects of EQ that cannot be ignored such as the massive focus on community within the game. Many new friends have been establish as well as marriages, not to mention the thrill and excitement you get from participating in a fun fast paced activity that you might enjoy. It should also be noted that EQ has been on the market now for 6 years now and EQ2 will be released in late 2004 with huge anticipation. It is obviously a game that is enjoyed by a great many people.
