Greene spent a good deal of effort connecting his live characters to the fictitious story portrayed in, “The Power and the Glory.” It is a sincere, but weighted attempt at telling one man’s story during a challenging time in Mexico’s history. The reader follows a man that knowingly has betrayed his calling by drinking, womanizing, bearing children, and avoiding his responsibilities to the church through a period in his life where he travels emotionally and mentally on a strange journey. The journey is one of self-reflection that we follow as he evades capture again and again, but finally, willingly walks into a trap made by the half-caste. In holding tight to his duty as a priest, and recognizing his fate to be revered as a martyr, he follows the lead of the half-caste, backtracking to find a fellow wanted man so they he may confess his horrific sins before dying. The whisky priest is allowed one last confession before being taken by the lieutenant to face his persecution.
