Progressive Era

Many changes took place during the time called the Progressive Era. Before the Progressive Era came about there were many problems in the country. But after that there were many positive changes. Improvements were made in the area of the environment, business and economy, and society and government. Three presidents influenced these reforms. Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, and William Howard Taft improved these areas for the best of the country.

The Progressive Era fist made a major impact in society and government. There were many reforms that took place in these areas. The first was that the government forced children out of factories and into school. Since children were forced to go to school, education was free. Second reform was the initiative that allowed a group of citizens to introduce legislation and required legislature to vote on it. Another reform was the referendum, which allowed proposed legislation to be submitted to the voters for approval. The recall, another one of the reforms that took place in this area, allowed voters to remove an elected official from office by holding a special election. This Era saw many reforms in business and economy too. First, is the reform of workers of factories working 60 to 80 hour weeks for a salary of $10 to $12 a week. Also laws were passed to regulate insurance companies and to protect the interest of policyholders. Another reform was that of zoning laws, which regulated how land and buildings could be used. Also labor unions were feared and good wages were only given to skilled workers during this time. Roosevelt impacted this area of reform too. He was not opposed to trusts. He understood that trust-busting suits could not prevent monopolies. Roosevelt also helped to end strike by using the prestige of his office and personal influence. Taft also did some things to influence this area too. He believed that high rates or tariffs encouraged monopoly. Later he made a law to reduce tariffs. Taft addressed the tariff issue by signing the Payne-Aldrich Tariff, which contained high duties on iron ore, coal, ides, and other materials. Wilson had a major impact in business and economic reforms too. Wilson believed lower rates would help businesses by putting them under constant necessity to be efficient, economical, and enterprising.
