Development of Western Politcal Thought

The development of Western Political thought started around 594 B.C. some could say with the reforms that Solon did and those that followed him, many great men contributed the development of Western Political thought, but there were some principles that had a big influence on the development. The 3 religions that arose from the Middle East, idea of due process and individual rights and liberties, and essential parts of democracy.

The development of Judaism, Islam, and Christianity contributed greatly to the development of Western Political thought in many different ways. They influenced the idea of individual worth and an individual’s responsibility in life. A key belief in Judaism that led to new emphasis on individual worth was that God had given humans moral freedom, meaning the freedom to choose between evil and good, therefore the person was responsible for the choices he or she made in life. The Jewish also believed that every person had the responsibility to oppose injustice and opposition and assist the unfortunate. Christianity had an important belief that helped in the development of Western Political thought, the essential equality in all human beings. Islam also had ideas of self worth and responsibility that helped


Western Political thought was based on several essential ideas and parts about democracy. An important part was that that of that people gave power to the government. The people vote for who they want in a government position, the position wasn’t given by divine right or anything; it was chosen by the people. This goes along with the idea of representation because people will vote for people who support their ideas. Representation is a very important part of democracy because without it, rebellion could happen as it happened in the American Revolution because Britain was taxing the colonists but the colonists had no representation in Parliament. We vote who we want to be President, Governor, Mayor, Senator, etc. If we don’t like them we have the right to get rid of them if they failed to protect our rights. Another essential part of democracy was the sepreation of powers. There is a need to balance the power to prevent it from being abused which was the system that Baron de Montesquieu thought of and is still used in the United States and many other democratic nations.
