Civil War
It was the only war fought on American soil by Americans, and for that reason we have always been fascinated with The Civil War. According to the U.S census at this time the population was 31,443,321. Out of all of these 23,000,000 were in the North and 9,000,000 in the South’s eleven states. It was the greatest war in the history of America. Three million soldiers fought, and 600,000 of them died. Also it is a known fact that each soldier was sick or seriously ill at least twice. Some of the diseases that the soldiers faced were dysentery, malaria, pneumonia, typhoid fever, and arthritis. Childhood illnesses such as measles, mumps, and malnutrition were common as well. Disease caused two-thirds of the deaths and war wounds caused another third. This was due to the fact that technology was not as good as today, where treatment does not consume so much time. Black soldiers were paid 10 dollars per month while serving in the Union army. This was 3 dollars less than white soldiers, which goes to show that equal rights were not present.
