Some of the most controversial issues in human history have been apparent since the beginning of human existence. Many of these conflicts are still present in modern day society. A look into the past brings up two distinct issues of women’s rights and child labor during the mid 19th century. These reforms had a profound effect on the democratic ideals of our developing nation in that time. The movements towards women’s rights and child labor between 1825 and 1850 supported democratic ideals in the United States. Others may interpret the definition of democracy in different ways, but the overall idea remains that of social equality, the benefit of the common people, and government by the people. Note the word choice of “people”. This conflict of interpreting the Constitution has had the largest effect on our nation’s history and plays a role in these reforms.

Another controversial issue still present in modern day society is child labor. Children were working in factories as early as 1790. So the idea of children making money has existed for a substantial amount of time without any major movements against it. It was cheaper to employ children than it was to employ adults because of the cheaper pay. The children were just as capable of doing many of the same jobs adults had. At an early age children were learning the difficulties of life and hardships of work. Responsibility was bestowed at a much younger age when one worked most of the day. William H. McGuffey wrote about a boy reflecting on his working experience. The boy’s reflection was surprisingly positive. The boy stated that he is happy that he can help his family and appreciates what he has much more. The boy in his writing believes that he can be very happy with his poverty even though he realizes the rich and what he could have. The ability of children to work is m
