Pat Conroy’s Lords of Discipline is a novel about the famed Carolina Military Instituteand the life of the students who attend. It focuses on Will McLean and his actions in and out of school. He is given the duty of protecting the first African-American student to attend the school from the mysterious group named “The Ten.” This job costs Will more than he could ever imagine, including two friends and nearly his diploma from the Institute. Throughout the novel, Will proves that honor is the greatest value one can have, even more so than fame, friendship or The Ten plagues Will during most of the book, yet by the end he finds out the identity of each member and threatens to reveal their secrets to the media. Will had the chance to become the most famous member of the Corps at the Institute. Revealing The Ten would cause a revolution at the institute, a scandal from which it would be hard pressed to recover.
