Is Wal-Mart Too Powerful?

Consumers have become customized to the superstores where you can find anything and everything on its premises. Every consumer loves it when they find a good deal, and a store full of low prices is the answer to that; I present to you Wal- Mart. It also isn’t bad idea to have greeters at every entrance to make you feel welcome when you enter the store. The bulletin boards with the missing children information on them, that’s looks great to the community and it does wonders for the company’s image. However, the real question we need to ask ourselves should be is Wal-Mart a good thing or a bad thing?

The income of the wealthy has risen while they pay less in taxes. Childhood poverty in America is on the rise. Workers are putting in longer hours, over 40 million people are without healthcare, and unemployment is over 6 percent. There is constant company downsizing all across the country, and factory jobs are leaving the country for lower wages overseas. I know what you’re thinking what does this have to do with Wal- Mart? Wal-Mart is the largest private employer in the country so that alone is a huge factor concerning all these issues. Last year Wal-Mart brought in $245 billion in revenues,

Part of Wal-Mart’s success lies within adopting the local standards of whatever community they build their stores in. The Wal-Mart model appears to be “virtuous.” They cover up magazines i.e., Cosmopolitan, Redbook, etc. They do not carry music that requires a parent advisory and various birth control products in their pharmacies. So, they present the right image to consumers and consumers buy into it. Also, they present lower prices than the competition. The super centers especially are catering to consumers, who want to do one-stop shopping. Consumers are loyal to this organization in their patronage of it. Why not? Consumers are getting what they want at low prices with the local image of that particular community. Why shouldn’t consumers support it for this reason alone? Despite of Wal-Mart’s image problems they still have the organizational support of their customers.

Is There ANYTHING Good About Wal-Mart?

Wal-Mart will continue to be the businesses foe and a consumer’s friend.

First off, Wal-Mart sponsored a community bike giveaway in Weymouth, Massachusetts. Wal-Mart donated seventy-five bicycles with minor imperfections to the Boston Society of Vulcans of Massachusetts, who in turn repaired the bikes and donated the bikes to the low-income, inner city children in their community. Along with the bicycle donation, the children were given their own helmet, and safety training. This is one good thing that Wal-Mart has done, but is there anything else? Surprisingly, the answer is YES!
