Inocence and Hope

In the start of the book, an enormous intergalactic war with an insect race has just ended. The “Hero” of the war was a thirteen year old boy named Ender Wiggin. He was the great commander of the Starcruisers and Fighters. He commanded from an asteroid, called Eros. At the end of the war, instead of returning to Earth, He decides to leave with a ship bound for a new colony planet. During the war though, Bean, another boy even younger than Ender, was Ender’s second. If the strain of battle became too great for Ender, Bean was the one who would take over.

When the war is over, Bean returns to earth. Soon after his return to earth, members of Ender’s “jeesh”(or his fellow youth commanders) are kidnapped. Except for Bean, because the pers

Anyway back to the ‘present’. Bean and Sister Carlotta are always arguing about innocence. Bean says that innocence is a myth, that all people are born base and corrupted.

on who choreographed the kidnaping’s thinks that bean is too smart to be used. Instead of trying to kidnap Bean they try to assassinate him. Because of this, Bean decides to go into hiding.

Back to Bean. Bean grew up (until he was four) on the harsh streets of the city of Rotterdam. There, it was only kill or be killed. You had to be totally ruthless to survive. Even going to the local convent to get food was a challenge of strength. The bigger ‘bullies’, of thirteen or fourteen, would be first in line to receive food. Then came the teen prostitutes. Then you got the smaller, younger bullies. And then finally at the end of the line would be the Baby Gang’s. This is where Bean started out. He first started his legacy there.

These ‘children’ are commanding some of the worlds greatest armies, because they have been trained in Battle School. Battle School is a place that the Intergalactic Fleet sends the most promising ‘children’, to learn to become commanders. All of the children sent there are far and above the average intelligence of adults.

Now you might have reasoned from my writing in the intro, that I hold bean in high regard. It actually comes closer to awe. I am shell-shocked by the way that Bean thinks. He comes up with some of the most thought provoking idea’s I have ever read. That, I think, is the reason why I love this book so much. There’s something about child prodigies, or child genius’, that spurs all kinds of adventures in one’s mind.

Sister Carlotta on the other hand, is a nun working in the slums of Rotterdam. She was the I.F.’s Quasi-recruiter. Her only real job was to help the children though. She believes that all human’s are basically good. That we have to work to be truly evil. She is convinced that God put her on the earth to do good for other people. She has dedicated her life to serving God and her fellow man. She is the one respons
