Safety Precautions: Be careful when testing the free fall speed.

Purpose: The accelerations will stay constant, while the velocities will increase.

Materials and Equipment: Wood Cart, Tape, The Spark Machine, Tractor, Special Tape for Sparks, Plank

1) Determine 5 meters on the ground and for each meter place a piece of tape down.

2) Switch the tractor so that it rolls forwards. Each time that the tractor crosses the tape, observe the time and write it down.

4) After you have finished all the trials calculate the interval velocity and interval acceleration for each trial.

1) Take the cart and tape the special spark tape to the back. Then thread the tape through the spark machine.

3) Turn on the machine and send the cart down. This will give you black dots on the special tape.

4) Repeat step one. Now let the car drop so you get the free fall.

In this lab, we looked at velocity and acceleration in both. In both velocity and acceleration, the same thing happened. Velocity is the change in distance over the change in time, while acceleration is the change in velocity over change in time. The velocity increased, but acceleration stayed the same. In the motion of a tractor the acceleration was 0 meters per second squared. In the free fall experiment the acceleration was -9.81 meters per second squared.
