Ben Franklin
Last year I had the great honor of interviewing one of our founding fathers. As you all know Benjamin died one month ago at the age of 84. I would like to share with you some moments from my amazing interview with him. Ben as he told me to call him came into my office like an ordinary American. You could have never guessed that he was the Benjamin Franklin who had such a great impact on American History. We got right down to the point and I asked him what he was like as a boy? He responded with “ Life growing up was tough, I was the 15 of 17 children in the household but we would help around the house so things got done easily. My dad was a candle maker do the money wasn’t really coming in very fast I had to start working very young. “How did you learn to read and write?” My father had all these religious books at home and I kinda taught myself to read. I don’t know how but I did. “ Tell me more about your education?” Well my father decided for me that I would have a career in the church. I didn’t mind but that took a lot of schooling 6 years of Latin school and then you would have to go on to Harvard. I attended Latin school and after a year I went to the top of the class and was told I would skip
“Can you tell me how you came up with a plan for a Union” It all started when I met with the Indians to settle with them about the French and Indian war when I realized how united they were and how equal they were. They had a much stronger government than we did. They actually gave me the idea to become a Union and I agreed with the idea. “ Then why didn’t America become a union?” I set up a council in Albany with state representatives and they all agreed to it and then I had to send copies of our plan to the king and colonies for approval. They both rejected it based on that the colonies believed that it gave the crown to much power and the crown thought it would give the people to much power. “What did you do after you ran away?” Well I went up to New York to find a job then I went to Philadelphia and was taken in by Samuel Keimer and I stayed with Mr. Read and my future wife and his daughter Deborah Read. Kiemer was not experienced as a printer. I actually think I had more experience than him. Later I became friends with Sir Willaim Keith and he promised me the world. He told me that if I go to my family and settle my dispute with them he would open a shop for me and I did. When I returned to Philadelphia with my fathers blessings the governor said all I had to do was go to London and get the supplies. That was a lie I was stuck in London for 18 months where I had no money. Thomas Denham told me he would pay for me to go back to America if I would become his clergy I agreed but three months after we returned he died I once again was left with nothing” Can you tell me more about the declaration of independence? It was a committee of me Jefferson adams roger Sherman and Robert Livingstion to draft the declaration of independence. Jefferson wrote the draft but me and Adams helped him edit it a little but it was mainly the brilliant writing of Jefferson. And on July fourth the declaration was adopted. I was also asked to re write the constitution of Pennsylvania. I was 70 then and life was getting hard so I removed from most committees to concentrate on congress. “ Can you tell me more about your apprentices?” Well at first my dad had me work for him as a candle and soap maker and I hated it and him being afraid that I would leave and go out to sea he let me pick another apprentice. I choose to work with my half brother James who owned a printing and I would work with him and set the print and go out and sell newspapers. I remember I would always ask my brother to let my write some articles but he would always tell me no, so I would secretly write articles and sign them under the name ‘Silence Dogood’. Everybody in the whole town loved them and I finally wrote 14 before I confessed and said it was me who wrote them my brother scolded me. He would often beat me. He published a paper called The Courant. He would talk about anything and everything. Much of them would be very offensive but he didn’t care. The royal gove
