Altering Society with the Deciet of a False Madness
It is the nature of humans to change the environment around them to suit their own needs. It can be something physical such as the landscape or the ecology of an area. It could also be non-physical such as society. For a society to be changed, the society's views have to be manipulated. The words of the one who changes need to become truth. The manipulation of these views often takes careful planning and even deceitful tactics in order to be successful. McMurphy and Hamlet both manipulate their societies to suit their needs by deceiving the members of those societies into believing something that is untrue to be the truth.McMurphy alters the society of the ward to suit his needs; to gain an easier life and some control over his environment. To get off the work farm, a place where he has no control, McMurphy exhibits psychopathic behaviour starts a few fights that result in a court appearance. McMurphy admits to using madness to get his way, “If it gets me out of those damn pea fields, I’ll be whatever their little heart desires, be it psychopath or mad dog”(Kesey, 18). Hamlet’s act is successful in convincing the members of the society of Ellsinore that he is mad, even his mother his convinced. Curious as to the source of Hamlet's madness, Polonius and the King plot to discover the source of Hamlet’s apparent strife using Ophelia. Acting the mad man, the King and Polomius get nothing from their spying, other than the assurance that hamlet is truly mad. This deceit works to Hamlet’s advantage. The King is focused on the source of a madness that does not exist. If it were not so, the King would other wise become
