Frodo Baggin's-Hero's Journey Summary

• Threshold Guardian(s): Gildor the Elf- warns Frodo not to linger on his way and not to go alone if he can help it. Farmer Maggot- warns Frodo about the dark riders and helps them cross Brandywine River and Crickhollow.

2. Threshold- Beginning of Transformation. Frodo leaves the Shire with Sam, Merry, and Pippin.

• Helper/Mentor: Tom Bombadil- Saves them from Old Man Willow. Saves them from barrow-wights, and demonic spirits in the earth. Then escorts them himself out of the forest to Bree.

• Helper/Mentor: Strider- Offers his help to the hobbits at the Prancing Pony in Bree. He will take them to Rivendell.

• Challenges and Temptations: At Weathertop, the hobbits and Strider are attacked by Dark Riders. Frodo is unable to resist slipping on the ring. He is wounded on the shoulder by a Rider.

• Helper/Mentor: Elbereth Githoniel- an elf who assists Frodo in crossing the river into Rivendell.

• Challenges and Temptations: Frodo is challenged by the Dark Ride

• Challenges and Temptations: Boromir loses self control and tries to take the ring from Frodo. He puts on the ring and runs away. Frodo realizes that he must go to Mount Doom alone, he starts off down the River Anduin but Sam follows.

• Helper/Mentor- Galadriel and Celeborn are the lady and lord of the elves. Galadriel shows Frodo and Sam her “mirror” which reveals certain things of the past and future. Galadriel gives Frodo a phial of water in which is caught the light of Earendil's star.

3. Abyss – Frodo and Sam reach Mount Doom.

• Challenges and Temptations: While passing through the mountain Caradhras, a heavy storm forces them to not take that route. The company has no choice but to pass through the Mines of Moria.

2. Threshold- Frodo leaves Rivendell and heads south for Mordor.

• Challenges and Tempations: In Moria the company find the tomb of Balin and learn that the dwarves were wiped out by orcs. They are attacked by orcs, concluding in the appearance of a Balrog. Gandalf fights the Balrog and dies. Aragorn takes leadership and they head for Lothlorien.
