Can a re- staged dance be authentic?
Discuss the word ‘authentic’ in relation to the re- staging of existing dance works. The word authentic means to be real and genuine. Relating this word to existing dance works is difficult as everything is authentic in its own right, but ideas and choreography usually come from something or someone of an important influence. I believe that any dance work is authentic on its opening night, whether it is the same production with the same storyline and choreography or an adaptation of a production. I believe this as dance always changes. The authenticity of something I think is in the choreographers’ personal preference and style of a dance work. Although the question arises, how authentic can an idea be considered to be? I will go on to compare and argue the authenticity of Petipa and Matthew Bourne’s version of the great ballet “Swan Lake”. There are many aspects to consider when tackling this subject, the date of which it was choreographed, different styles and influences on dance, technological advances, the general public and the way of thinking are all very valid points to take into account. I believe this because any dance work can be made to be authentic if something has not
