Panama canal

The Panama Canal is one of the most spectacular and illuminating structures made by humans. This canal helped to bring two worlds together.

Before the canal idea was thought about, many people wanted an easier way to travel from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean and vice versa. This canal portrayed a much greater use than travel or trade.

North America and South America are thought to be connected, hence the name north and south. But in reality now a day, we are one hundred and ten feet or thirty-four meters apart. Before the canal was built, we were connected without any distance in between us. In the early 1900’s, before the canal was built, citizens of the United States or other sailors travelling almost dreaded the idea of travelling by water from New York to California. Because they couldn’t go through a canal, they’d have to go all the way down south past Mexico and around South America. Or they could go up north around Canada and by Alaska and take the chance of hitting an iceberg – which does happen in 1912 when the Titanic hit an iceberg. Neither of those choices excited nor amused any of the sailors that had to travel.

After many times travelling north and south around the countries, th

Even thought the canal has some weight restrictions, it is one of the most traveled waterways in the world. It takes about nine hours to get through the whole canal, which equals fifty-one miles. That’s a lot less excruciating than travelling weeks around South America or sinking around Canada and Alaska (The Construction).

After the canal was built through Panama, there have been discussions of three other canals that could be built. One through Mexico, another through Nicaragua, and the other one, surprisingly, through Colombia. Even if they did make three other canals, the Panama Canal would still be the best site to see. The reason for that is because it’s the oldest, we had to go through a lot to get it and it just wouldn’t be the same as the Panama Canal.

Before the United States even became involved in building the Panama Canal, the French had the idea. A man by the name of Ferdinand de Lesseps was the former creator of the Suez Canal in Egypt (History and Building of the Panama Canal). He wanted to be known as the one who helped form the Panama Canal. Maybe he could even get an award for the most canals started. In the midst of trying to get the Panama Canal built, his men were getting their lives taken by Malaria, Yellow Fever and other diseases. Nine years went by and also went down the drain. So did about twenty thousand of de Lesseps’ men’s lives (The Panama Canal: A Brief History).

e United States decided they needed to find a short cut. They came to another conclusion that the c
