Many fans always become excited when they see two players drop their gloves. It is like a sudden rush of adrenaline because watching two players shed blood seems to be the fun part of the game. Who would have thought shedding blood during a hockey game would be the highlight of the night? It seems as though that more often fighting is more important than skating and checking more important than scoring. Or does it really appear to be like that? It may appear to many people like that because they may not be interested in the sport and do not know that hitting will always be apart of the game. Others will gladly disagree. Some will say that if there were not at least a few hits in a game then it just would not be the same. Clearly this is a controversial subject that has been debated by the NHL. Hockey around the world has been such a growing sport and it only continues to grow. If you take a look at most teams, most players are from Europe. It makes you wonder, wasn’t this sport first played in Canada? Players around the league respect each other as equals. They play in the league because they are the best. When teams like Ottawa and Toronto play they make it seem like they hate each other but all players knows that they respect each other because when players are on the ice they have this bond like no one else. Therefore, there shouldn’t be any grudges held against each other. For instance, there was a game being played by the New Jersey Devils and the Florida Panthers. Niedermayer of the Devils hit Worrell over the head with his stick. This situation was a lot like the one where McSorley hit Brashear over the head only the injury with Worrell wasn’t as severe. He was able to get off the ice without assistance. Either way Niedermayer still hit him in the head. Like McSorley, Niedermayer apologized and admitted that it was not the thing to do but he couldn’t go and take it back. After that hit, Worrell made a throat-slashing gesture towards Niedermayer. That is definitely something a player should not do. Niedermayer and his teammates were furious over that gesture. That’s just something you don’t do to another person. Bobby Holik of the New Jersey Devils quoted, “The NFL has a written rule on that…The NHL might have to come up with something, too.” Does the league really need to get to the point where there has to be a written rule for every thing? Has the respect for players and for one another gone down the drain? To be at that level of hockey and still play as though they’re in the minors is quite disturbing. Each and every NHL player has at least one kid that looks up to them and when pulling a stunt like that it doesn’t teach them to play like they should.
