Can we know something that has not been proven true?

The Theory Of Knowledge book outlines many different ways of knowing. Justified true belief is one of those ways. Another way of knowing something is true without proof is called knowledge by conviction, which is faith. As for me even without the textbook I would say, “Yes, we could know something is true without proof.” There are people who are famous today because of the theories they had, about things people couldn’t believe to be true because there was no evidence to prove it.

People such as Leonardo De Vinci, who said that we could fly. He had people laugh at him, but look today we have airplanes in which people use everyday to travel in. We used them in Wars, to win battles. In transportation, to get from place to place. He believed we could fly and even tried to build a flying machine. Even though he didn’t succeed he had faith. In the Theory Of Knowledge book it says, “Faith is very powerful way of knowing. It’s power lies; strangely, in it’s lack of conventional rationality.” (Pg. 23 14th line from the bottom)

You also had a famous man named Galileo who come up with so many theories. He said that the earth was round, but no one believed him. He said that the planet Venus showed phases like those of the

So belief and Faith play a major role in our lives on whether we know something is true of not. It take a lot of faith and belief to know something is true. Not everything can be explained, at least not yet anyways. But, we all know things because we believe in it. That is how I know that the answer to the original question, “Can we know something that has not been proven true?” Is yes we can.

Belief and faith can also be used to prove that you can’t know something without proof. All belief and faith is something that we know to be true but have no real physical proof to show that it’s true. Our senses often deceive us; in Galileo’s case he used his telescope to see the changes in Venus’s position. How do we know that his eyes weren’t deceiving him? How do we know that Galileo is right about us going around the sun and it not going around the earth? People know that sometimes we don’t like change, especially when it’s something as bizarre as being able to fly. It’s awfully hard to accept things that we really can’t see or touch. As it says in the Theory Of Knowledge book, “humans are sometime misled by what we want to believe, want to think or want to happen.” “A tendency to accept what you want to accept and believe what you want to believe.” So how can we believe something is true without proof?

Another question to better prove my point is how we know we are really here, how do we know were not just dreaming all this up? The truth is we really don’t, we don’t know anything. We only know what we are told to be true. We only know something is true by having Faith that it is true. As said before faith is a very powerful way of knowing. So many people in this world use faith as a way of knowing. When a person come up to ask us if we are a Christian, we might say yes, but what if they asked us to prove it? We may say because we go to church and have confessed their sins. Then again asked to prove it. We can’t, we can’t prove something on a topic such as this. That is because we only know that it is true because we believe it is true.
