Brave New World Book Notes

Aldous Leonard Huxley was born on July 26, 1894 in Godalming, Surrey, SE England, UK. He was a surrounded by many famous people. He was the grandson of Thomas Henry Huxley, a great biologist who helped develop the theory of evolution. His mother had many connections to the literary world, being the relative of many novelists and poets. When Huxley was 16, he acquired an eye illness and became nearly blind. He studied at Oxford, and lived mainly in Italy in the 1920s, and moved to California in 1937. He wrote a variety of types of works, including poetry, short stories, and literary journalism, but his reputation was made with his novels Crome Yellow (1921) and Antic Hay (1923). Later novels include Point Counter Point (1928) and his best-known work, Brave New World (1932). Later writings include Eyeless in Gaza (1936) Time Must Have a Stop (1944), and Island (1962).

Bernard Marx – An Alpha male who is different from all his peers, and is considered by many to be odd. He is the one who discovers John on the Reservation, and takes him back to his world.

Lenina Crowne – A female who accompanies Bernard to the Reservation and becomes almost obsessed with John.

John’s behavior becomes even more irrational, and it seems as though he his suffocating in their society. He is thrown over the edge after Linda’s death when a few young children come in for their death conditioning and comment on how disgusting she looks. Outraged, he leaves the hospital and elicits a riot during a rationing of soma to the Deltas. Bernard and Helmholtz rush to the scene, and are confronted by Mustapha Mond, who takes them back to his office. He sends Bernard and Helmholtz to exile. John begs him to do the same but he refuses, and he ends up in a lighthouse in the countryside. After a group of curious citizens find him at the lighthouse, a swarm of reporters descend on John. After being overwhelmed by the sadness of the New World, John hangs himself.
