Beowulf vs. 13th Warrior

Enchanted by chivalry, driven with courage, and filled with the deeds of heroic leaders, Beowulf, and its subsequent video interpretation, “The 13th Warrior” tells the tale of a people long in distress. Comparatively, the two works share many common elements, such as three distinct apocalyptic battles; however “The 13th Warrior” only extracts a framework from its derivative, Beowulf. Beowulf was an oral story written and translated into an epic poem by an 8th century monk. Consequently, there is a large influence of monotheism that conquers the ideals of paganism which are introduced through the poem’s, and subsequently the video’s, main characters; a group of Vikings. Throughout each story the leader, Beowulf, represents everything that is pure and good. He is filled with valor, loyalty, unselfishness, and justice. All the while, Grendel, his soon-to-be enemy, symbolizes everything that is evil.

Imbued with God’s powers of strength and perhaps a limited bit of immortality, Beowulf is called to the troubled scene of the Denmark shores. Thus, the saga begins. The Danish King has called upon his neighbor, Geatland, for help. The neighboring king, Edgetho, sends his son Beowulf in hopes he will defeat

Lastly, the final battle of the epic poem, titled “The Last Battle,” differs greatly from that of the film. Previously stated, most of the film’s last battle can be compared to the poem’s first section. However, it is in the last battle of both works that the reader truly learns and is able to witness the selflessness and courage of genuine warriors. In “The 13th Warrior” Buliwif is dying by the end of the film, but it is with ever morsel of strength that he rises to the challenge and fights the battle against the raging attack of the “bear-men.” The thirteen warriors quickly become motivated by their leader’s courage; they fight, and successfully defeat the attack. Similarly, Beowulf, by the conclusion of the poem, is nearly 70 years old and a long-time king of Geatland. Comparable to Buliwif’s injuries, Beowulf’s age hinders his ability to fight his last battle and he requires the aid of his men to do so.

only deals with one demon at a time, whereas in the film, the first battle is fought against several “bear-men” in the Herot. Although the time and setting is the same in both the poem and video, it is important to realize the difference in challenges. Buliwif, aided by his men, is attacked by only humans who dress as demons; however Beowulf single-handedly tears Grendel’s limb a
