How does Shakespeare establish the mood, the tone and the pl

#Shakespeare starts the play on a dark and sinister note. The opening scene is set in a street in Venice at night. This gives the reader a sense of foreboding. A sense of danger. Venice being the centre of trade during Shakespeare’s time was an exotic setting for the play. But, in the play apart from the title and settings there are few hints to as to the location where the play is set. Setting the play in Venice, Shakespeare ensures that the play is set on a grand scale. Another reason for his chosen setting is that it was the style of the time to set plays in exotic locations such as Italy.

Shakespeare uses man’s inborn fear of the dark, to start the play of on a provocative note. This he combines with a heated argument between Iago and Rogerigo to start the play on an almost explosive note. The language he uses in the argument also helps to establish the tone. And gives us a good idea of the things that will unfold later in the play. Iago’s opening lines start of with him swearing, giving us an idea of his character. ‘’Sblood but you will not hear me.’ Roderigo’s insulting remark about Othello, establishes the racist side of the play. ‘The thick lips.’ This establishes the fact that in Shakespeare’s t

Through Othello’s first speech itself, Shakespeare tells us a lot about his character. Being our first true meeting with him it makes a lasting impression. It shows Othello as being calm and dignified. He comes through as being level-headed. He says that he has no reason to fear for he loves Desdemona, and in his eyes falling in love is no sin. ‘For know Iago, But that I love the gentle Desdemona.’ He also adds that if Brabantio did raise a hue and cry, then his (Othello’s) services to Venice would not allow anything to happen to him. ‘My sevices which I have done the signiory Shall out-tongue his complaints.’

From the opening few pages of the play, we get a distinct idea of some of the main characters, the plot, and some of the ideas in the play. The play is based on how people plot successfully to bring an honest hard working man down from the top all because he is slightly different. Iago we know is defintely going to be the villain. He comes through as a ‘devil’. A swear word he often uses himself. Roderigo is also not straight character. He is less evil than Iago, and cannot get his ends easily. Othello as should be is calm, dignified, and brave. He feels that he has done no wrong and so he will not be a coward and hide. And even if he has, he says it is his doing and he will face the consequences. He is the hero who will fall from grace. But he is not untainted. I get a subtle hint of over-confidence in him. Which just may have aided his downfall.
