Possible Effects of Fantasy in an Adult’s Life

The concept of ‘fantasy’ has the capability of shaping our minds. Before beginning it is necessary to define the term of fantasy for a better understanding. Actually fantasy’s core elements are the fairytales. Without the meaning of fairytales we can not have a chance to talk about ‘fantasy’. From the essay of J.R.R. Tolkien, fairies are:

“supernatural beings of diminutive size, in popular belief supposed to possess magical powers and to have great influence for good or evil over the affairs of man” (J.R.R. Tolkien, On Fairy Tales, 1964)

This is a general explanation of fairies. At this stage it is not necessary to put all of our attention onto this subject. What is have to be discussed are the possible unforeseen issues of fairytales. The possible dangerous effect of the concept of fantasy is that it can affect an adult’s life from the beginning of that human’s childhood. Total audience of fairytales is generally the children. This can be understood from the following example of statement:

“It is much easier to communicate with them-children- through an imaginary word that simply exemplifies the problems of real life.

“‘Was he good? Was he wicked?’ That is,they were more concerned to get the Right side and the Wrong side clear.” (J.R.R. Tolkien, On Fairy Tales, 1964)

Fairytales can be created by evil audiences. There is no rule that fairytales’ contents will be created by good people. While explaining the real problems of real life by using fairytales, we have to choose the elements of good and bad very carefully. Selecting a bad example and a not reasonable solution to the indirectly stated problem can change the child’s mind in an unexpected way and cause several problems during their lives.

“It is true that in recent times fairy-stories have usually been written or adapted for children” (J.R.R. Tolkien, On Fairy Tales, 1964)

“Fantasy can be carried to excess. It can be ill done. It can be put to evil uses. It may even delude the minds out of which it came.” (J.R.R. Tolkien, On Fairy Tales, 1964)
