Catcher in the Rye compared to Ordinary People
Ordinary People and The Catcher in the Rye were two very relatable books, especially for teenagers. Both the book and the movie contain everyday obsticles that teenagers face. In The Catcher in the Rye we read as Holden tried to overcome the deep rut of depression that we has in. In Ordinary People, Conrad became happy and accepted once again. Although the movie is not an exact shadow of the book, they are very similar and in many cases Holden and Conrad share the same kinds of problems. Dealing with superficial people was a large part of why both Conrad and Holden had such problems in life. In The Catcher in the Rye, Holden was so concentrated on the way people viewed him that he could not have possibly been a happy young man. He was lazy and tried to appear as if he did not care about anything, but after he reveals his actual thoughts, it is clear that he sympathizes with those who may not be as fortunate and may not be as bright as he. It’s very sad because just walking down the streets of New York, Holden finds a problem with just about anyone who he comes in contact with. He seeks out the bad things about people rather than search for the good qualities in them. In Ordin
In the late teenage years, boys and girls both seek out attention from the opposite sex. In The Catcher in the Rye, Holden had a huge problem with girls. He was not the best looking guy nor was he confident. He just went for girls that he heard were “easy” and when he did get those girls, they did not seem to be good enough for him. It seems as though Holden may not have necessarily wanted a girlfriend. He wanted the companionship and the loyalty that went along with the title. He lacked in the friend department and thought that a girl would solve lots of his problems. He may have even thought that a relationship would make him happy once again, but in the long run he came to think that he did not deserve to be happy. In Ordinary People, Conrad’s problems focused more around his issues with his friends. Girls seemed to have sympathy for him and in the movie he had a shoulder or two to cry on. Although, because of girls the guys that he considered his friends teased him and were just immature about the situation. In the end though, Conrad realized who his real friends were and some of those guys were cut out of his life. Throughout both story lines, Holden and Conrad are faced with some amazing obstacles. They have their own problems overcoming these but are both partially renewed by the end of the book and movie. Holden is in a hospital getting help for his depression. Conrad’s mother leaves the family which seems like a bad th
