The Theme of Death in

In my opinion, Tolstoy hopes his readers can be aware of what are the truly meaningful

things in life.This novel gives way to the room for us to retropect ourselves and to introsepect the

life we lead profoundly now and here.

The protagonist in this novel, Ivan Ilych , who is a seemingly successful official, lives the

most unchaotic life and hence most terrible, for His life is lived in ''death.'' To one point,

his life is lived in death be cause it's devoid of vitality and variety. He follows the so-called

defined rules share by the high-class people , pursues his career blindly, and he uses his

self-confining persepectives to make his life suceessful.However, what he thinks is

successful may well be nothing more than a vanity in disguise. His blind aspiration for his

possessions brings about his ignorance of what is truly vital and everlasting.And what veil

his vision is the unreal and vain '' recoginitions.'' of himself. He seems that his life proves

to be '' meaningful.'' and ''successful'' by achievinging the step-by-step accomplishments or

some material things. For example, in his perception he thinks that if he obtains something

acknowleged by the society , his life


reflection'' greatly. If Ivan had lead his life with instinct , he wouldn't have wasted it in vain.

nor punishment, so it must not be as horrible as living in hell.

But '' he succumbed to sensuality , to vanity and latterly among the highest classes to liberalism.''(111)
