The Unforgettable Romeo and Juliet
Well-performed plays always have something that stands out. People do not always remember everything about a play, but there is always some aspect that they never forget. Some plays have magnificent plots or wonderfully orchestrated action scenes. The most interesting part in Romeo and Juliet are the characters. Shakespeare's characters in Romeo and Juliet behave in a manner congruent with the reader's expectations. Best friends in the play portray best friends today. In Act III Benvolio says, "I pray thee, good Mercutio, let's retire. The day is hot; the Capels are abroad, and if we meet, we shall not 'scape a brawl…" Benvolio tries to protect Mercutio by urging him to get out of the streets. A best friend is expected to look out for the other and try to keep him or her from becoming involved in violence. In Act I Mercutio says, "If love be rough with you, be rough with love. Prick love for pricking and you beat love down." Mercutio tries to cheer up Romeo, who is love sick, by telling him to retaliate against love for hurting him. The actions of today's teenagers continue to copycat those from hundreds of years ago. In Act II Juliet says, "Three words, dear Romeo, and good night indeed. If that thy bent of love be honorable, they purpose marriage, send me word tomorrow…" After only a few hours of meeting, Juliet is asking Romeo whether or not they will marry. So many teenagers today rush into risky situations without looking at the big picture. In Act I Juliet says, "My only love, sprung from my only hate! Too early seen unknown; and known too late…" Juliet says that even though Romeo is a Montague, that she is in love with him. Most teenagers base their relationships on looks and believe that meeting someone pretty means they are in love. In Act I Romeo says, "Why such is love's transgression… A choking gall, and a preserving sweet. Farewell my coz." Romeo is expressing his sadness for his crush Rosaline who neglects to feel the same way to Romeo, as he loves her. Short and insignificant relationships with teenagers, today, are often taken too seriously when some may still not know the meaning of love.
