Living by Faith
Throughout history many philosophers have studied God and the role that faith should play in a person’s life. Many of these philosophers have come to the conclusion that in order to live a rational life one must have faith. The role that faith plays in directing peoples lives will vary between different people and different circumstances. Faith should never completely control someone’s life but it should always be present acting as a guide to help people stay on a moral path. Life can be lived weather one has faith or not, the difference is the quality of ones life. In Fear and Trembling, Kierkegaard says that "Faith is the highest passion in man.” He is saying that people need and crave faith in order to live. It is nessacary to have a life with some faith, it is also nessacary to live by sight. Living by sight alone will leave a void in ones live because there will be to many questions left without answers. In order to live rationally on needs to have faith not in God, or other religious beliefs but instead, have faith in doing what is morally right. Faith means something different for each individual, however, living rationally means to live ethically and resonmably and this is what people should have faith in. Throughout history there has been religion, however, not everyone has the same religious beliefs. Some people believe in many gods while others believe in God the Father, and still others believe in many different things. “Religion is a system of symbols which acts to establish powerful, pervasive, and long-lasting moods and motivations in men by formulating conceptions of a general order of existence and clothing these conceptions with such an aura of factuality that the moods and motivations seem uniquely realistic” (Geertz 4). With this idea from Greetz we are able to find that although there are many different religions they all share a common bond. They provide people with comfort and security. Religion and faith allow people to have structure and order in their lives which keeps them lioving a more rational and moral life. So it seems as
