Americans spend a large portion of their lives working. But are they really happy with their current job situation? What are the reasons behind why people choose their jobs? Is it because of money, or they receive good benefits or could it be that they really do enjoy their job? This research paper explorers many issues of job satisfaction and if the average American worker is truly satisfied with their current career. It also touches on the topic of why people choose the jobs they take and if they regret their decision on taking the position. It also explorers the reasons why unsatisfied employees stay in current positions instead of making a complete career change? After surveying the average American worker, conclusions were made on what a person’s current employer could do to make their job more enjoyable. Job satisfaction is an important topic because it affects each and every working person in this country. The focus of job satisfaction should not only lie in the hands of the employer, but it must first begin with the employee. Prospective employees must become active while interviewing for positions and scrutinize their job choices. In order to attain job satisfaction, before a job offer is accepted, a prospective employee should consider the six major factors to consider when searching for job satisfaction (“Managing job satisfaction,” 2000). Although some would like to think that compensation and benefits are going to keep them satisfied, in a study done by www.performance-unlimited.com, only 21% of employees attributed their job satisfaction to compensation and benefits (“Increasing job satisfaction,” 1999). Asking questions about opportunity, stress, leadership, work standards, fair rewards and adequate authority, are all key when considering a position. According to our job survey, 22 out of 40 people enjoyed telling people what they do for a living. In order for this number to increase, prospective employees must research companies and positions they are applying for in order to know if it will be a position where they will gain satisfaction. In order for an employee to gain job satisfaction and an employer to ensure that employees are satisfied, the research must be put to use. Researching and analyzing job satisfaction is only the beginning. Throughout this research it has been found that in order for an employee to be satisfied with a job, they must first assess what is important to them and look for those qualities in a position. Also, after analyzing the research, it would be safe to say that in order for an employer to stay profitable and create a thriving atmosphere, they would have to take interest in the satisfaction of their employees. From an analytical prospective, it comes down to the employee knowing what they need in order to feel satisfied in the workplace and the employer taking an active role in making that happen. There are many things a person can do to increase their job satisfaction. When interviewing for a prospective job they should not only be the interviewee; they should also be the interviewer. Before accepting a job it is okay to ask questions to ensure that this is the right position to take. People have to remember that although money and benefits are a key factor to accepting a job, they should not be the only factors. If a person feels that they are not qualified or have the skills to get a better job; shouldn’t they do something about it? Life is too short to just be content. People need to be go getters and follow their dreams. It is never too late to fulfill ones dreams and have the jobs that they always dreamed of. Employers have to realize that the image and atmosphere they create for themselves, not only affect them, but every person that works for them. No employee wants to be associated with a company that treats their employees unfairly or without respect.
