The author Bernard Mac Laverty was born in Belfast in 1942 and has spent most of his life there. He studied English at the Queen’s University in Belfast and he is a fulltime writer. He has been awarded several prizes for his literature. His first novel “Lamb” was published in 1980 and “Cal” was published in 1983. He has also published three collections of short stories: “Secrets and Other Stories”, “A time to Dance”, “The Great Profundo and Other Stories”. I might read one of theese one day. The novels “Lamb” and “Cal” have been made into successful films and I have seen the film “Cal” a long time ago, and I love the film and also the music to this film, music played by the famous guitarist Mark Knopfler, whom many of my generation knows very well. I have read somewhere that Laverty’s writing often consists of a father-son relationship where the mother is somehow not present. The story takes place in Northern Ireland and we meet, for the first time, Cal in an abattoir where his father works and Cal is waiting for the father to give him some cigarettes as he is in lack of money, waiting for his dole. Cal did work at the abattoir before
One day Cal and his father are burned out of their house by the Protestants and Cal sees no other solution than to live in a little cottage on the Morton’s farm and this way he also gets to see Marcella more often. They both become very fond of each other but Cal realizes that it is never going to them because of what he did to Marcella’s husband. He is though never able to tell her about the doing. The main topic of this story is however to tell about how Catholics and Protestants relate to each other in Northern Ireland. The ever going conflicts is told through the ways and actions of a young Irish Catholic.
