Setting: The novel is set in the mid seventeenth century. It takes place in Boston. The weather there is very cold in the winter and warm in the summer. The soil is not very fertile. There are forests everywhere and in the forests live Indians. The Puritans settled there, so most laws are very strict. Boston is located in a natural bay. Its location makes it a good place for shipping. That is why Boston is mainly a port.

Theme: The novel centers itself around sin. It says that harboring your sins from everyone will never make you feel better. The only way to free yourself from your sins, its to confess them.

Hester Prynne: Hester is the main character of the novel. She was married to Mr. Prynne while in England. Then Mr. Prynne sent her to America and told her that he would soon follow. Hester waits two years and then commits adultery with the young priest, Mr. Dimmesdale. Once the baby is born Hester is blamed for adultery. Arthur Dimmesdale: Arthur was the young priest of Boston. He was well educated, so he preached very good sermons. He also knew a lot about people, so he could make people believe him very easily. The congregation quickly fell in love with him. He committed adultery with Hester, but did not admit it. He had a very strong conscience and it made him suffer. He tried fasting and vigils but they did not relive his pain. He wanted to confess his sin but could not get the courage to do so. His conscience tormented his mind and in return his body began to be affected. He developed a heart condition, which eventually killed him. Even after his confession the people still loved him. They tried to convince themselves that he was just delirious and that’s why he said he committed adultery.

her clothing. She also begins to do a lot of charity work. The only thing that Hester really cares about is her daughter. She always takes her daughter with her when she goes somewhere. By the end of the story the townspeople begin to respect Hester and do not pay as much attention to her scarlet letter.

The novel starts off with an introductory. It talks about how the narrator found a story written by a man who lived a hundred years earlier. The narrator lost his job and then decided to write a fictional version of the story he found. In chapter one the prison that Hester is in is described. It is gloomy and old. The only nice part is the rose bush growing outside of it. Chapter two talks about Hester’s punishment. She is brought out in front on the townspeople and put in the pillory. She has her baby in her hand and the scarlet letter on her bosom. The ministers question her but she does not reveal the father. She is sentenced to three hours in the pillory and a lifetime of wearing the scarlet letter. She notices that her husband is in the crowd. Mr. Prynne motions her not to reveal him. After three hours she is sent back to prison. While in prison the authorities bring in a physician named Roger Chillingworth to examine her. He is actually her husband. He gives Pearl and her some medicine. Then he tells Hester not to reveal his real identity. He tries to get Hester to tell him who her lover is, but she does not. Roger already has an idea who it is and begins to plan revenge. Chapter five talks about Hester’s ability to sew. Hester is released from prison and she decides to settle in a small home on the edge of town.
